UNGC, GCNN, NESG Hold Workshop on Managing Corporate Sustainability Performance through the SDG Action Manager
The United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), The Global Compact Network Nigeria (GCNN) and The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) held a workshop with the theme: Managing Corporate Sustainability Performance through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Action Manager on the 10th of March 2020 at the NESG Summit House, Ikoyi, Lagos.
To kick start the event, Acting Head of Think Tank Operations at the NESG, Mrs Titilope Oni while welcoming participants to the event mentioned that the NESG was proud to be associated with the work of the UNGC and that the collaboration was set on ensuring that institutions and companies foster corporate sustainability performance. Afterwards, Executive Director of GCNN, Ms Naomi Nwokolo delivered her remarks and revealed that the GCNN advances corporate sustainability in Nigeria by helping companies understand what responsible business means within our national context and guide them on how to put their sustainability commitments into actions. She said the UNGC; the parent organization of the GCNN, not only helps in moving the sustainability agenda forward but also plays a pivotal role in ensuring corporate sustainability the world over and they achieve this by collaborating with businesses and Civil Society to take strategic actions that support the society around them, commit at the highest level of the organization and report annually on their progress.
Ms Amira Alfa, Senior Manager, Corporate Engagement at United Nations Global Compact, while delivering a presentation revealed that more than 10,000 companies are committed to issues around sustainability and about 99 per cent of the Chief Executive Officers of these companies see the future business value of corporate sustainability. She also made it known that it was pertinent that companies realize that there is a need for ambition and scaling for the SDG’s to be achieved.
During the training session, Ms Claudia Escobar, Senior Marketing Manager UNGC, introduced the SDG manager tool to participants and stated that the SDG manager tool will enable companies to track the progress of their actions and activities as it relates to corporate sustainability. She thereafter took participants through the SDG manager tool and trained them on how to track and report their progress. Ms Escobar concluded the session by encouraging participants to put the SDG manager tool to good use and partner with the UNGC/GCNN to help track the performance of corporate sustainability in their various organizations’ and also ensure that the sustainable development goals become a reality.
